Alternative Surgeries
Our flagship surgery is the Minimally Invasive approach. But not every bunion can be treated in this way. We also perform three other surgical procedures that are extremely effective and popular.

For small to moderate deformities
Scarf and Akin Osteotomy
The Scarf and Akin procedure is used to correct small to moderate bunion deformities.
It allows early weight-bearing due to the stability of the specialised bone cuts and titanium screws used to fix the bone alignment in the new position.
This corrective bunion procedure is one of the most popular operations globally.
- Restores foot mechanics
- Allows for correction of small and moderate deformities
- Low recurrence rate (2-5%)
For severe Bunions & hypermobility
Lapidus Procedure
Also known as hallux valgus, the Lapidus procedure is a surgical procedure used to treat a sever bunion deformity.
It involves fusing the joint between the first metatarsal bone and one of the small bones in your midfoot called the medial cuneiform.
- Preservation of big toe joint function
- Allows for correction of small and moderate deformities
- Beneficial for hypermobility as it stabilises the midfoot
- Reduced risk of recurrence in hypermobile feet

For a Tailor's Bunion
Tailor's Bunion Correction
A Tailor’s bunion is a deformity that affects the fifth toe and metatarsal bone (bone of the ball of thre 5th toe).
The condition is often progressive if left untreated, it cannot be corrected without surgery. As the bump on the fifth toe gets larger it can cause pain from excessive friction against footwear.
The osteotomy procedure allows correction of the Tailor’s bunion with the use of two screw fixations.
- Restores foot mechanics
- Allows excellent movement of the joint
- Very low recurrence rate
How are Bunions Treated?
Bunions are a bony deformity that forms on the side of your foot below the big toe joint.
When a bunion develops the big toe will typically start to point towards the other toes on the same foot, which may then result in the metatarsal bone attached to point outwards.
